(we talk some more and i find out about vaccinations, temperament, feeding, socialization where the dog is kept, the reason caller waited for so long before asking for help is that breeder said that dogs should only be trained after 6 months and a few other details). me: i will charge you kes 4,500 per session. caller: can you do less? me: no, kes 4,500 per session for 3 sessions and your dog will be obedience and potty trained plus i will handle behavior issues like jumping, destroying stuff and running out of the house. the only condition is that you will have to be there for the training sessions. caller: only three sessions? me: yes, only three sessions or less depending on your dog’s temperament, your bond and interaction with the dog and your level of commitment and consistency. caller: can you do kes 3,500? me: no, its kes 4,500 per session please note that you may not need all three sessions. caller: ok, i will think about it and let you know. me: thank you for calling. i look forward to hearing from you. i am already late for work by the end of the conversation so as i have to drive faster than usual and focus on what i have to do when i get to work so i forget all about it by the time i reach the airport, until about five months later when i get a frantic call early in the morning about a dog that has attacked a child for ‘no reason’. as an ardent dog enthusiast (forgive me for not saying dog lover) and doting pet steward not to mention pet trainer and stewards for pets instructor, i get very concerned and upset when a dog attacks a child, owner, family member, visitor, or someone it has no reason to attack for as its commonly stated, (for no reason). a dog will never attack for’ no reason’! in the course of the conversation with the caller i learn that the dog that bit a child is very aggressive towards people, randomly attacks without giving any warning, cannot even be taken for a walks and has been banished from the house to a kennel in the yard among other things that i will not mention. i am curious and want to know more plus the caller’s voice sounds a bit familiar so i ask if we had spoken before. in the end, it’s the same caller who had talked to me about 5 months earlier who instead of getting back to me had engaged another ‘trainer’, and paid kes 35,000 over about 4 months to have their dog trained two to three times a week.. caller was not there during the training, got updates every one or two weeks sometimes through phone and the dog had been trained to be more ‘alert’ which means aggression trained. this is not the first time this kind of event has occurred and its really upsetting because both parties, human and dog end up suffering and loosing. i am upset. have seen too many dogs being rehomed or at worst case being put down and it doesn’t matter if it’s because of ignorance, bad advice or just being cheap (which in the long term doesn’t make sense really 13,500 compared to 35,000)?? this could have been easily avoided and i wonder why does someone contract an excellent mechanic and get the best parts for their car, or the best contractors and materials for their homes or best schooling for their children or personal education among other things but not invest in their own and dog’s safety and well being? you, yes you, dog lover, furry baby owner, whatever you call yourself; giving a dog a home, expensive food, vet care and even clothes is not enough! the most important aspect of owning a dog is understanding that a dog is a dog and not a baby or little human being so it follows that every dog steward has a responsibility to understand their dogs personality and how to communicate with him or her. there are good trainers and instructors. individuals, who see their responsibility to help pets and pet owners as a vocation, they invest in formal education in the field, keep up to date with latest training methods, take pride in their work and don’t merely see dog training as a means to make a quick buck. you love your dog? get someone to help and make sure you are there when it’s being done. dogs do not have issues, they get issues when we stewards do not understand them or treat them like children or as sons or daughters and not as dogs. share this: share facebook twitter google l
